Personality:
As very simple-minded kid, Blood D. Key is your typical, stupid, naïve, friendly pirate who seems to have a black hole for a stomach and a total loss for sense of direction. Key is full of energy and is able have a smile of hope even at the worst. Although low in IQ, he’s not to be taken easily in battle. He is a combat genius without knowing and goes just by instinct how to pull off his next strike. His instinct and behavior is similar to that of a wild animal’s, like when he knows who he has to fight before he even gets to the battle. Key is not angered by those who pick on or mess with him and will hold back even at the some of the worst case scenarios but, he will go berserk when another person goes after anyone in danger or usually his friends. This adds to his recklessness and that he always seems to get in trouble. He is amazed by the smallest and simplest things and is very greedy when it comes to food, but is humble and selfless when making decisions to rather put himself in danger for his friends.

Behavior/Habits:
Key’s behavior is very childish and almost animalistic. He is very, very reckless and is extremely greedy with food. He easily loses his temper when his needs are not met. He has a habit of smiling when he senses a bit of hope which could be the case of the Will of the D. He always seems to have an extreme amount of energy and spirit in him He also has a “habit” of landing and resulting in the worst possible cases, like wandering around aimlessly in one post and ending up in an all-out brawl in the next, however, he will end up successfully running away or beating everyone up. His epithet "Energy Virus" has been earned due to the high spirits he brings out around others. It is almost as if he happy energy is very contagious to others.

History:
  Being the orphaned villager boy, Blood D. Key had very big dreams and loved adventure. However, he had no motivations to be a pirate at first. Blood D. Key had two other friends that he had played with ever since as much as his memories go. One was a girl and the other was a boy. Until, when he was seven, the Marines had taken away two childhood friends for slavery due to reasons unknown to Key. Furious, he had tried to go after the Marines shouting that it was unfair to him.
  One year later, as the Marines continued to control the island in terror. Key ran into the Marines while recklessly running away from a wild animal. The Marines were furious and started to order Key to return to his home at once with an early curfew. Having no home, Key just disobeyed and ran away. While running he ran into a strange man who appeared to be drunk. The Marines told the man to move over so they can arrest Key. The strange man just smiled and told them to go away. In result, the Marines beat him and spit on him while Key, felt a guilt but ran away due to him also being in trouble if he stayed long enough.
  The little boy, Key, was walking across the beach until he bumped into an unusually large peach that seemed to be a bright red <Oura Oura no Mi>. With his stupidity and hungry mind, he ate it. Now with a sick stomach, Key aimlessly wandered around until he bumped into the same man who got kicked around. The man told him to stay behind due to him being face to face with the same marines that were chasing Key yesterday for going against their orders of curfew. Then, the man defeated the marines without much movement from his spot and told them “You can beat and spit on me and I’ll just wipe it away, but never touch one of my crewmates”. The man turned out to be the pirate captain of a very strong and huge crew that had been hanging out in the village in exchange to offer money for the village just a few months ago. However, when the Marine vessel came back in to attack the village again, only one of the pirates stood up from the tavern and came back from an explosion from the Marine ship and said to “never come back to attack this village again”. Key had asked why the captain had saved him. The captain replied that “Key is his crewmate”. The motivation and energy had given Key a dream to become a pirate. From then on Key swore to the village and the crew that he would become the Pirate King.
