Personality: Shian actually claims himself that his compassion, kindness, and willingness to protect people only go to those he "likes"; or, in other words, people who catch his attention for some reason or another. Of course, being him, it just so happens that he "likes" most of the people he encounters (generally, anybody that's not trying to kill him.)

Shian has admitted that he doesn't want to be a hero. He will help people if he deems that he "likes them," would rather die than leave a comrade behind, and doesn't do typical pirate things like rape and pillage, but he doesn't necessarily care what people think of him, and if the situation calls for it, he goes way  overboard and uses his enemies as human shields or human weapons and destroys public property freely in his many battles and uses trees and buildings as weapons. Shian was notorious for causing huge amounts of civilian casualties, though by all means unintentional.

However, he does admire heroes enormously. His reasons for not wanting to be one is among the lines of him viewing heroes as completely selfless. In which case, his refusal stems from the expectations, he, as a hero, would have to do that would bother him, i.e. sharing his share of provision, treasure and adventure.

" I AM GOING TO BE THE KING OF THE PIRATES" It may not sound like much to our ears, but this statement is considered utterly shocking, as many mere mortals are scared to challenge the world like this. Shian loves a good fight — and it doesn't help that it's one of the few things in this world he's good at, to the point of being considered a genius with talents for fighting that is off the charts. Though he doesn't like pointless fights with weaklings.

Not so intellectual when it comes to science, mathematics and medicine — he once tried to heal a wounded man by pouring booze on his face because "The man seems to like sake, so it'll make him better". However, he's a super-genius in combat, social skills, and politics, beating "wittier" enemies.

In spite of his adamant claims to not be a hero,  Shian does NOT gracefully tolerate over-entitled assholes who use their positions and power to brazenly bully those weaker than they are; he has a particularly sore spot towards bad bosses, or captains who mistreat loyal employees who they should be taking care of. Shian is hardly a hero (and doesn't want to be one), but he has a massive problem with powerful people abusing their power and often demonstrates it with his fists.

Shian shows how much he loves his friends by hugging them, regardless of gender. This can get problematic when the girl in question is actually romantically and passionately interested in him; all the more so because he won't return romantic love.

While Shian is lacking about things like mathematics and science, he is a very good and mostly pure man. He will go out of his way to help people if they were kind to him, and recognize when he is in a situation he needs help in.

It does not matter that he is badly hurt and freezing to death, or poisoned to the point of melting, his friends come first. He never even asks for himself to be helped, merely begs for whoever is there to aid his companions.

Shian is smart for a pirate, and not just in combat; he has shown an understanding of physics, social skills, survival skills, and politics. The 'book dumb' part comes from his simple mind and simple outlook on life; while he understands that the current of Reverse Mountain has a scientific explanation, he prefers to just call it a "Mystery Mountain" because it's easier and more fun. That sort of description extends to several other subjects. But he is not book smart. He tends to be spacey and fuelled by his emotions. But when it comes to fighting, he is very good at understanding what is needed to win.

His word is the greatest thing he can give. He takes it seriously. How serious? He promised that he'd be friend forever with the females of the Blue Seas, so when some of them was taken from him, he went on a rampage resulting in the complete annihilation of a Marine Base. He also ignores his word when he feels like it. He gave his word repeatedly that he would not mess with a World Government no matter what happened. He totally kept his word. Though he often has a serious air, Shian enjoys going with the flow and appearing in unexpected places and in unexpected ways, especially given his status.

Shian, in his own pure-hearted way, does love all of his female friends back; the same way he would love and lay down his life for any of his precious friends. They, although aware of this, personally wished it were something more. While not spending any of his childhood with his father, he has nonetheless taken after him with his will and dangerous unpredictability, and both are stakes in the World Government's side.
If there's anything in this world that Shian does not fear, it is death.  While not an integral part of his character, his father willingly left him to go help the rest of the world, his mother hasn't even been mentioned, and his Grandpa made no attempt to at least have him raised near him. Luckily, though, his foster mother and brothers made up for this void, and the only time he ever showed sadness over being lonely was in childhood.

Shian's not interested in pillaging and raping, unlike other Pirates, but only became a Pirate for the sake of adventures. He mostly fights with other Pirates and the Government, but leaves civilians alone. Though he does cause lots of property damage, and he's not opposed to stealing available loot if an opportunity arises.  At least half of everything Shian has ever done is driven out of the intense love he has for his friends and allies. While undoubtedly selfish, there isn't anything in the world Shian wouldn't do for their sake.

He always believes in his friends, even when they appear to betray or murder one of their own. Shian is an excellent judge of character, successfully allying even with former enemies, both as permanent comrades and as temporary allies.
Shian's first and greatest crime was being born into the world, for his father is a world-renowned criminal; a predicament similar to that of his own father, their existences alone being sins in the eyes of the world. Unlike his father, however, his parentage doesn't really bother him all that much — partially because stuff like that never mattered to Shian, and partially because Shian didn't know he even had a father until he was seventeen.

He would have been killed many times if not for incredible strokes of devilish luck and immeasurable allies who are willing to save his ass. In some less dangerous situations he knows what he does, but his problem is that he basically has no fears and fails to recognize true danger. He takes everything lightly regardless of the severity of the moment. In surprising, perilous and unexpected situations, he is apparently never shocked or surprised by anything.

Shian refuses to follow the typical code of pirates, a code that revolves around pirating for treasure rather than your dreams, and does not harm civilians and steal. On one occasion, this even got him ridiculed and beaten to a bloody mess, but he still stands strong by his beliefs.

Shian can be particularly murderous, he has shown his ruthlessness and shows very little mercy towards his enemies. He was even described by other pirates as being capable of exuding an irrationally monstrous killing intent.  Shian has also stated several times of his willingness to kill.

While he isn't evil, Shian is pretty merciless, and not above killing or injuring enemies he encounters. However, even he is visibly disgusted by World Government's willingness to murder an entire country of innocence for personal gain, angrily snarling the term "not-human" was created to describe scum such as them. Despite this he is serious about his crusade reminding himself that the conflict against the World Government will be arduous.

He has nerves of steel as he reacts very calmly to situations. Justified as Shian's belief in fate leads him to leave things to luck. He is the most vicious of the rookie, having no qualms with lethal force. Though, he will sometimes go out of his way to help innocent bystanders.

    Likes:
Causing headaches for the World Government.

To expel the Marine threat - this would actually be a motivation, however, since he always gets into  battle, and butt heads with them in lands and in seas, anytime and anywhere. This shows how fearless he is and does not hesitate to challenge the naval force of the World Government. He considers them a threat and when he expels them from his way he likes it most. When they did not get their way is what it really is.

Heroes, though he doesn't wish to become one of them. When in fact, his action insofar have shown him to be the truer, and greater heroes than those mentioned in stories and legends.

He also appears to have an strong love of combat, wanting to test his skills out on anyone he finds. He especially enjoys strong opponents.

Adventure in general, he lives for the thrill of adventure, rather, he is born for it. He claimed it makes his blood boils and it makes him feels alive.

    Dislikes:
He may not act like it all the time, but for him, being a pirate is serious business, he does not take it lightly. He doesn't take kindly to those who flaunt the jolly roger.

Hurting anybody who's been nice to you is another way to tick him off.

Mocking the weak, because he seems to have a high regard for those who have courage.

He rejects the increasing Pirate beliefs of not believing in the future, seeks to bring a New Age, he is a firm believer in personal strength and morals (primarily dreams, in his case).

A new one that has surfaced is making a negative comment about him. When he feels that he is being insulted, he is quick to resort to heavy violence. He is quite sensitive to being mocked, insulted or glanced at.

Shian is also shown to be quite disparaging about the World Government, and has a strong hatred of Marines. After witnessing the senseless murder of many innocent people, Shian may have come to realize the depths to which the World Government will sink to accomplish their goals, remarking that compared to them pirates are almost humane in nature and that they at least have charming sides and do not hesitate to be honest about their faults.

Those who laughs at his ambition, they say that he slaughters anyone and everyone who ever laughed at his ambition.

    Motivations:
He made a badass one as a child:
I'll become the world's strongest pirate, I'll become so strong, my name will be heard even by the gods in heaven!"

To become the man with the most freedom in the seas, because of his extraordinary thirst for adventure and instinctive adventurous nature, Shian has a belief that the Pirate King would be the one on the entire ocean with the most freedom for adventuring.

To become the King of all Pirates by finding One Piece.

His dreams are huge and his ambitions powerful.

    Fears:

Boredom, at this point in time, he is almost always seems to be bored out of his mind because he is missing awesome, devastating and thrilling fights of his life that fuelled his adrenaline. This is something he fears, because he admitted that all that is left is utter boredom by the lack of violence and anger at the lack of fighting people have been throwing at him.

The death of someone of importance, and the reason why he never says goodbye to those he considers friends, in hopes of seeing them again once he made his dream come true.

    Behavior/Habits:
He usually make a rousing speech; once to the Marine. He compliments them on sticking up to their beliefs and assures them that some fights aren't worth it with fools like wannabe pirates. It's enough to leave them speechless.

Shian has a gravitational and dominant charisma about him that draws people to his side who wish to follow him, his personality has a profound influence on people, especially the pirates of South Blue and by their own admission Shian is the only man fit to rule the seas because men of his calibre are hard to come by in today's world.

Shian was very quick to anger and he would retaliate for something as simple as an insult to him regardless of how small it might be. He also has a fun-loving partying nature, as his favourite pastimes are attending and hosting parties and banquet in his hometown Baterilla in South Blue.

The only way his lies could be more blatant would be if a neon sign appeared on top of his head and flashed "I AM LYING" every time he lied. He simply has no talent for lying whatsoever, as if he had been borne to never lie. He is unable to lie in even unconvincing way and comes up with really silly lies that fool no one.

Shian powers through injuries that should have killed him several times over, often without outside assistance. In no particular order, he's been dehydrated to a dissected husk, skewered, cut, drowned, blown up, bitten (a sea king bite, mind you), beaten to a bloody pulp, stabbed, crushed, covered in arrows, frozen, burnt, shot by lasers, and poisoned to the point of melting, yet is still alive and kicking. This is bad habit because he will not live long if this continue.

No matter what happens, he will be always behave in light-hearted manner, jolly and smiling non-stop. He never actually intended anything bad either because of his moral values or his naiveté.

His actions has been very pure and straight, just like a child's, and that he is fortunate to survive and become a pirate despite his extremely reckless and absolutely bold behavior. He is sweet and innocent like a child which is evident when he always promised to return to his residence during his stop on any island by dinner time. Even though not telling everyone about the lengths a corrupt supervisor would go was a mistake, this shows that Shian has a strong and gentle spirit since not hating the guy who had him demoted.

History: Shian Gaia was born on Baterilla, South Blue. The baby was lucky-he grew up in a very well-off household. Money gave him everything he and his parents could want; the finest toys,  the greatest sweets, and most excellent tutoring from all across the world. His tutor were the best in what all tutors did in the South Blue; swordplay. However, it was the one art Shian seemed unable to pick up, he never had an interest in it. He'd excel in most of his other classes, but as soon as he picked up a sword he'd act as if he couldn't care less. From a young age he forsook the weapon, saying about how blades were for pussies. Needless to say, he was marked as an outsider, an alien. The friends he had abandoned him, and whenever he did see them, they get into bloody fights.

He ordered the tutor to teach him about martial arts, and, although reluctant, the tutor obliged. On retrospection, this would turn out to delineate Shian, for the tutor was a master of the Power of Destruction-Asura Style, a style that was revolving around the use of energy, vibration, the air, tremor and shock waves with a number of applications: it allows the user to control vibrations around their limbs to generate shock, this fighting style can be used on any limb of the user's body, whether it be the fists, legs, or elbows. The most prominent applications are: channeling elemental power into the limbs, such as fire or electricity, and generate huge vibrations or devastating shock waves, which can travel though virtually any medium, including the ground, the seafloor, or even in the air. And, they are also able to harness their physical strength to perform offensive maneuvers, such as repelling the very air around them at very high-speed with a palm thrust. In many ways similar to how one use the Busoshoku Haki.

Though there are two types: the power types and speed types, he would most likely fall under the power type, a prediction that which came true. He is, a genius when it comes to the fighting expertise, such as when he figured out how to subdue Devil Fruit user power' without the use of Haki, how to use Soru from sight by simply , most recently, learning almost everything his tutor had to teach him about the fighting style in almost no time. His tutor was exceedingly proud of him, although he drilled him immensely and very ruthlessly. He has been trained to become strong enough to use Rokushiki or, at the very least, the Soru technique. In fact, on more than one occasion, Shian was able to anticipate moves and counter attacks that would normally be beyond his field of vision due to his proficiency in Soru. He is also shown to increase in speed, reaction time, dexterity and agility quite dramatically in a very short period of time, making him a natural combat specialist as expected by his tutor. Even before the formal training of the Soru technique, Shian is able to react to foes faster than him by reflex. Though, they both learned early on of his greatest power, it is not his great superhuman speed, but instead, his great superhuman strength. And therefore, they worked on refining his brute strength instead of continuing as he had solid foundation of the Soru Technique.

The next time his old 'friends' came around, Shian greeted them with a never-before-seen humility. They didn't like this one bit; opting to try and strike him down as they had done before.

    Bad idea.

Shian' bad temper and thunderous rage got the better of him for the first time in a long time, and he just let all hell break loose. He didn't know how he did it (the red fume had descended and so he didn't know what he was doing, it was like how the Magma appeared on Akainu's fist), but five minutes later he was standing stock still, around him most of his 'friends' were knocked out cold, at the very brink of death with few inches left of their life by the sheer force at which he demonstrated his newfound strength. He was only a kid then, so he screamed in fear. The parents of the bullies caught wind of what had happened. They blamed Shian, but the young fighter swore he had no clue what had happened.

Later that night his guardian interrogated him. Shian stuck to his story, with the addition of a few tears, and genuinely regretting his action. During his tearful outburst he made a run for it; again displaying the abilities of the Asura by flipping over a dozen chairs and three tables, and performing more superhuman acrobatics around the room as his father tried, in vain, to calm him down and keep him there. This display finally revealed the truth about Shian- he was a martial artist at heart. Surprisingly his parents weren't all that upset, rather choosing to nurture their son's unique hobby, instead of suppressing it. Knowing this, his parents brought in more tutors, even more brutish than the last, far more experienced and even more strict; however, these were the best combat instructors from the marines. Over seven years Shian was trained as if he was one, and had his power, brute strength trained and honed to an outstanding level. His hand-to-hand skills were incomparable within his group of trainee, a natural. However, wealth of talents had a downside - Shian grew bored of the combat training, he learned everything in an instant. He requested he stopped, and, his parents fully aware that they couldn't stop him, agreed. However, he did not stop the strength training, and kept on building his muscle and increasing his strength dramatically to gain the most high he possibly could. Shian developed a fearsome reputation in the Blue Seas, and by age seventeen most of the bullies that had threatened him were now his sycophants.

The early intellect shown within Shian had since dimmed, but no attention was paid to that fact. Rather, the proverbial spotlight was on the fact that he wanted to enroll in the marines. It turned out he had rather enjoyed his time with the strenuous combat training, and when he broke the news to his parents, they were horrified! Who wanted their son even when not blood-related out there on the front line, trying to stop the all-crushing wave that was piracy? They resisted, but Shian vehemently asserted himself. Their little feud went on for two years, and despite the ample evidence that their son was more than ready, they still refused. It took the treasure of the Pirate King to temporarily convince them that it was safe, and by the time news of the great surge of piracy caught their ears, Shian was already in the Marine HQ, ford of the Marine located in the Calm Belt.

Marine training was a walk in the park for someone who had pretty much experienced it all before. Shian was always cited for his utter superiority, absolute excellence and superlative quality as a fighter and as a devoted soldier, he has shown great growth, and passed with relative ease; many of his 'groupies', did not. Disillusioned about his confidence now that the constant natter of how great he was had died down, Shian felt the need to exceed his limits to prove himself to his instructor. As a chore boy he took down two wanted head of 20,000,000, and 23,000,000 beli simultaneously by himself, breaking the ranks of the other hapless goons and chasing down the pirate, he was very thorough and so dedicated to his duty. He was subsequently promoted. At Chief Petty Officer he single-handedly stopped a world-class criminal from breaking into Loguetown base by infiltrating their division and battering them senseless. Other feats such as these eventually saw Shian rise up to the rank of Captain in a mere two years. He even had his own crew, and received that awesome jacket that only the coolest marines seem to own.  Shian and everyone he knew was proud of him. He was then to be stationed in the "paradise" or the Grandline.

However, pride, as they say, comes before a fall.

At seventeen Shian had been serving the force for two years and six months. He was patrolling the East Blue seas when he received a call by Den Den Mushi that ordered him to sail and raid Marine 153rd branch. A little confused as the base had since been liberated from its odious purpose, Shian obliged and sailed along with his crew to the destination. Upon arrival he was greeted by a renegade marine, whom was holding a cursed fruit. As the renegade preached about how long he'd been waiting for Shian to arrive and about how his boss had been grinding his gears over the amount of secrecy required to stop ordinary folks from losing faith in the marines, while keeping their little 'deal' afloat, the 'Marine' realized something was amiss. The renegade marine talked so freely about the marine's corruption, that it was almost certainly true. Shian became a little more than displeased, and brutally assault and hound the renegade marine. A full on brawl took place, with Shian coming out the victor, but it would prove to be an inevitable victory.

The source of the corruption was the head of the marine base, who filed out a bad report of Shian. He could do nothing as a disciplinary hearing ruled in favor of his own agenda, and as such demoted Shian to Ensign and disbanded his crew. Many of Shian's friends believed him, but the example that had been made of their hero scared them into subordination. They did not rile up with Shian to fight this corruption. Rather, they acted with solemn faces in betrayal of their friend.

This would have simply broken most people, but it had the opposite effect on the ensign.  Whom has become a pirate, he has some understanding of the workings of the World Government, and is able to use this knowledge to protect himself from danger and predict the movements of the Marine. Shian already started from saving people in the shadows to openly attacking the World Government.

The reason for which he turned pirate is unknown, although his guardian did speculate in an off-hand comment that it might have been "to see what the other side was like". What is known is that his movement and acts is a threat to the stability of the world in spite of being a simple rookie since his aim is to go against the World Government and what it stands for.
